Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is a newly discovered energy-releasing nitrogen cycle in which ammonium is oxidized by bacterial nitrite or by a syntrophic consortium with nitrite-oxidizing bacteria to yield nitrogen gas in the absence of nitrate. A syntrophic partnership consisting of a thermophilic anammox bacterium and a nitrite-oxidizing bacterium was recently isolated from activated sludge. The anammox community in this syntrophic partner harbors another distinctive thermophilic anammox bacterial species, 'Brocadia fulgida', which is phylogenetically closest to the anammox bacterium 'Kuenenia stuttgartiensis' and which, like 'Kuenenia', exhibits unusually low phosphorus solubilizing activity in the medium. For reasons presently unknown, 'Brocadia' can grow and fix nitrogen only under phosphorus limiting conditions. We hypothesize that part of the carbon source of 'Brocadia' is obtained from phosphonate. Furthermore, 'Brocadia' as a syntrophic partner provides 'Kuenenia' with an almost complete set of genes for phosphorus acquisition and assimilation including the gene for phytase, which is needed for the assimilation of phosphonate. We conclude that 'Brocadia' can survive by obtaining part of its carbon from phosphonate and growing under phosphorus limitation only in a syntrophic partnership with 'Kuenen 0b46394aab
