Sea of Darkness documents the travels of three Indo surfers, Mike Boyum, Bruce Raymond and Dave Barnett -- aka the “Dream Team” -- who, in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, went out looking for the perfect wave and then stumbled into smuggling and eventually getting into huge, and ultimately deadly, trouble. The film follows their journeys further into the jungles of Bali and Java and also records the year-long links established between the three surfers and the powerful Bahasa-speaking Balinese tribal leaders in Plered, Nirmala and Suramya. Seas of Darkness was produced by James Oblowitz with Stuart Stovitz, and features contributions from Grant Day, Sebastian De la Cruz, James Brewer, Luke J. M. Triggs, Bruce Ebert (of Grey’s Anatomy fame), Holly Robinson Peete (Delroy Lindo's daughter) and more.
For an undamaged documentary about surfing and the surfing community, the film is more than a little rough around the edges -- it's also staggeringly beautiful. The music is sourced largely from local musicians who play the songs that accompany the footage (e.g., “Strangers” by Jesse J and the Fever). Gert Westphal, co-founder of the surf collective, MRAs, plays the part of a repressed old wild man in the film, a key figure in much of the film's content. Bruce Raymond played the part of Smithy (the one who can make anything go) quite nicely.
The film's producers are currently in the process of taking Sea of Darkness to Sundance, and are seeking distributors for it. Produced by James Oblowitz for the 7th annual San Francisco Ocean Film Festival, the film is being presented at the San Francisco Ocean Film Festival's first surf program .
