In November 2009, the FCC re-transitioned its PDF files to a URL scheme that opens the file directly in Adobe Acrobat Reader. While the click-to-download capability of these links was not actually changed, we had to change the links to create a new workflow which would open the file in Acrobat Reader without having to use a browser. Now when a PDF file is clicked on, it will open in Acrobat Reader. To open a PDF file in Acrobat Reader, you may need to download and install the Acrobat reader software from the Adobe Acrobat web site. Once you've downloaded and installed the reader following the on-screen instructions, you may need to configure it as a browser plug-in or helper application so that you can view any PDF file on the Internet automatically by clicking on its hotlink (just as you would any other web page link). After this one-time setup, you can automatically view any PDF document.
The Invisible Helper extension installs the pdf.js JavaScript library into Firefox, which allows Firefox to run Adobe Reader or a similar PDF viewer within the browser window. You can find more details at:
If the Acrobat Reader does not appear when you click on a link for a PDF file on the Internet, try clearing your browser's cache. This can sometimes help if there was a temporary glitch on a site's web server.
Note: If the file is not a PDF, it will be downloaded as a zip file. This is a limitation of the HTML a tag. The a tag can only point to a file type. If we wanted to direct the browser to a zip file, we would need to use the appropriate URL:
